If you’re into Pokémon card collecting, chances are you’ve already heard about Surging Sparks, the latest set in the Scarlet and Violet era.
With new sets rolling out al the time, deciding where to spend your hard-earned money can be tricky.
That’s why I’m here to give you five solid reasons why Surging Sparks might just be worth the investment.
1. The ETB x Shinji Kanda
The Elite Trainer Box (ETB) for Surging Sparks is a must-have product, especially with the stunning Magneton promo card illustrated by Shinji Kanda. If you’re unfamiliar with Kanda, he’s the mastermind behind some of the most iconic cards, like the Giratina V Alt in Lost Origin and the Magikarp Illustration Rare in Paldea Evolved.
This Magneton promo stands out as one of the best in the Scarlet and Violet era, thanks to Kanda’s unique style. For collectors, the Pokemon Center stamped version adds that extra layer of exclusivity, making it even more desirable. If you’re into premium cards with top-tier artwork, the Surging Sparks ETB is definitely worth grabbing.
2. Underutilised Pokemon made desirable
Another reason Surging Sparks stands out is how it breathes new life into underutilised Pokemon. Castform, Braviary, and Skarmory, often overlooked in past sets, are getting some well-deserved attention with their stunning artwork. The unique designs really elevate these Pokemon, and fans are already praising how beautifully they’ve been portrayed.
The Skarmory illustration rare, in particular, is turning heads and is expected to be a highly sought-after card due to its incredible design. If you’re into collecting cards with standout artwork, these underappreciated Pokemon are about to become must-haves in your collection.
3. A Pikachu themed release
Now, before you roll your eyes, hear me out. Pikachu being the mascot of Surging Sparks is a huge plus for collectors. As we all know, Pikachu is the biggest fan favourite, and when it’s included in a set, you can bet it’s going to attract a lot of attention.
Now, we know that the whole Pikachu gimmick was a bit of a flop for Vivid Voltage, but this set has far more standout cards beyond just one major Pikachu card.
With the Surging Sparks release date strategically set in November (*cough* Christmas gifts *cough*), kids and parents will be all over it which only boosts the demand. For collectors, that means Pikachu cards are likely to hold their value and become must-haves.
Oh and not to mention it’s an absolutely gorgeous card.
4. The Special Illustrations rares go in hard!
The Special Illustration Rares in Surging Sparks goes all out, making them the highlight of the set, in my opinion.
Lisia’s Special Illustration Rare is already generating buzz, likely becoming one of the most expensive and sought-after cards.
The Alolan Exeggutor, featuring its Terra-type form with stunning rainbow borders is another standout expected to be a top chase card. However, the Latias Special Illustration Rare is predicted to steal the show. Its gorgeous design paired with the dragon-type’s popularity is setting it up to be a collector’s dream.
Even the new Gen 9 addition, Archeludon, looks phenomenal with killer artwork.
5. Welcome, Feebas!
The last thing I’m particularly excited about in Surging Sparks is Feebas finally getting its moment as an Illustration Rare. It’s well-deserved considering Feebas’ unique status in the Pokemon universe (remember that specific tile in Pokemon Emerald?)
Even better is how the Feebas and Milotic Illustration Rares visually stack, with Feebas underwater and Milotic gliding above. That storytelling element in the artwork is what makes these Illustration Rares so special, much like what we’ve seen in previous sets.
There’s also some speculation that Feebas might be a rare pull, fitting its elusive nature in the games, which would make it even more of a gem for collectors.
